The Learmonth Family
When a father has three daughters you would think he wouldn't have anyone to share his love of cars with, especially Holdens, but not the Learmonth's. John and Jan Learmonth, along with their three daughters Tracy, Susan and Roberta have over ten cars. Starting with the head of the family John, who's collection starts with a 1956 FJ Holden which many Holden perfectionist have debated one detail of the immaculately restored model: wether the wheel arches were originally painted black or finished in red lead.
Most of those 1956 models to roll out of Brisbane's Acacia Ridge plant indeed had red lead wheel arches, but John, being the enthusiast that he is, has meet the assmbly line worker who had just enough black paint left to spray the arches on the very last model. The car was also won by a local lady in the 1956 Carnival of Flowers raffle for 5 shillings a ticket. The car is also the same as the one that his parents owned even with his daughters getting personalised plates for the vehicl to match those that were on the one his parents owned. John also used to race FJs at the Toowoomba Speedway, back in the old days. He is now in the process of simultaniously restoring a 1957 FC Holden Ute and a 1982 WB One Tonne Ute that until 12 months ago was his work vehicle for his glass and aluminium business while the 1957 FC Sedan is still in the shed awaiting restoration. John's wife, Jan, has a 2000 SSCommodore Sedan and a 1965 HDX2 which, as the old story goes, was previously owned by two old ladies who drove the car to the grocery store and back. This vehicle is nearly as original as it gets with only the muffler having been replaced on the car.
John and Jan are only the second owners of the car, not bad going for a car over fourty years old and they even have the original paperwork for the purchase of the vehicle brand new. Daughter Tracy hasn't got a bad collection herself, having rebuilt a 1956 FE Holden Sedan with the help of her father when she was in her 20's and she also owns a 1984 VH SS Group C Brook Commodorecomplete with autograph from the King of Bathurst himself Peter Brook who she meet at a race meet at Lakeside Raceway in the early 90's. Next of the daughters, Susan, along with her husband Steve and children Madison and Toby, are also keen members and have a 1964 EH Holden Sedan that she also fully restored and modified with the help of John. This vehicle did the rounds of the show circuits for many years and took out many trophies, but as it goes, she then had kids and somehow child seats just don't look as good in the back of such a show car. They now only take the car out for Club events. Then we come to the black sheep of the family, youngest daughter, Roberta, who owns a 2002 Volkswagon Beetle. Having been members of the Club for close to 20 years and with Jan being the Automania Co-ordinator and Roberta being the Secetary, it is no doubt that this family is in fact car crazy.
